Santa Margarita River Trail Preserve
The region's best broad experience follows one of Southern California's last free-flowing wild rivers through oak and sycamore shade. Five miles of river corridor connect to a much larger hiking and equestrian system, so the visit can be a gentle out-and-back or a real trail day. Current visitors praise the water, shade, and route variety; heat, mud, parking, and navigation are the recurring costs. Start from River Edge Road and turn around with enough time to clear the early gate.
